Volcan Compañía Minera reaches a new milestone in mining innovation with the implementation of Peru’s first fleet of CAT R1600H low-profile loaders operating autonomously, developed in partnership with Ferreyros and its principal Caterpillar. These units, with a 10.5-ton payload capacity, will commence production activities at the Romina mining operation.
This advancement incorporates Caterpillar’s MineStar Command for Underground technology, enabling the equipment to operate autonomously in material hauling and dumping, while performing loading activities remotely and without line of sight, supported by an operator from a control station located at the operation. This solution represents the highest technological standard available for this type of equipment.
The deployment of this autonomous fleet marks a new phase for underground mining in the country, enhancing safety by reducing worker exposure in high-risk areas and optimizing productivity through operational continuity and process precision.
This initiative is aligned with the innovation strategy of the Romina Project, which utilizes the sublevel stoping mining method and a Mining 4.0 model based on real-time monitoring and control. This approach enables higher levels of efficiency, productivity, and operational traceability, positioning Romina as a benchmark in technology-driven underground mining.
Additionally, the implemented system allows for the simultaneous autonomous operation of up to three loaders, using advanced algorithms that process real-time data from onboard cameras, radar, and sensors, along with digital mapping of the operating environment. This enables autonomous navigation, obstacle detection, safe stopping and resumption of operations, as well as efficient execution of dumping activities.
The technological solution also integrates a remote control center, a local communication network, and an area isolation system, ensuring safe and controlled operating conditions.
This milestone positions Peru as the first country in Latin America to operate CAT low-profile loaders autonomously with this technology, joining operations in regions such as North America, Asia, Oceania, and Africa.
With this implementation, Volcan continues to strengthen the development of its main growth project, reaffirming its commitment to innovation, safety, and the advancement of a modern, efficient, and sustainable mining industry.
